Back To School With Braces

Now that summer is winding down, soon the new school year will begin. Before heading back to the classroom, schedule an appointment with Dr. Stormberg to improve your smile! Even if you can’t schedule an appointment before classes start, we have plenty of appointment times available so you can find one that works best with your schedule:

• We offer 7a.m. appointments on Tuesdays and Fridays for teachers, students, athletes and more!
• We also have appointments available at 12:30 p.m. during lunchtime and after school.
• Our office is open on many school holidays including Martin Luther King Jr Day, President’s Day, Veteran’s Day and most fall and spring breaks.

After you schedule an appointment with us, be sure to follow these tips that make heading back to school while wearing braces easier!

Take Along a Braces Survival Kit

Because it’s super important to brush your teeth thoroughly after eating when wearing braces, it’s a good idea to carry a ‘braces survival kit’ with you that includes your toothbrush and toothpaste. Then after eating lunch, you can step into a restroom and brush your teeth. It’s also wise to put some dental wax in your kit so you have it available in case of a poking wire or irritating bracket. And don’t forget to include a protective mouthguard which you should always wear when playing sports so you can keep your teeth and braces safe from harm.

Remember to Steer Clear of Braces-Busting Foods

When we put braces on your teeth, we told you how important it is to avoid eating hard, crunchy, chewy and gooey foods that can damage or break your braces. Because it can be tempting to head to the nearest vending machine to grab a sticky candy bar at break time, we recommend taking some braces-friendly snacks along with you to school like soft fruits, yogurt or applesauce.

Take Good Care of Your Retainers

For those of you wearing retainers, be sure to place them in their protective cases when eating lunch or snacks so they don’t become damaged or lost. It’s very common for students to toss their retainers in the trash at school because they’ve wrapped them in napkins when eating.

Don’t Skip Your Appointments

In order to keep your treatment plan on track, it’s imperative that you come to your regularly scheduled appointments so we can check your progress and make any necessary adjustments to your braces. Before it’s time for you to see Dr. Stormberg, we will send you an appointment reminder via text message, email or phone to make it easy for you to remember your next appointment.
