Early Treatment

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children get their first orthodontic check-up at age 7. We may or may not recommend starting treatment at this early age, but evaluating early allows Dr. Stormberg to spot any current orthodontic problems or issues that may develop into problems later. From there, we can recommend either starting treatment right away or monitoring development until the right time for treatment.
The Advantages of Early Orthodontic Evaluation
While it isn’t right for all patients, early orthodontic treatment comes with a range of advantages. Treating early allows us to shape the development of the teeth and mouth, letting us make significant alterations to tooth alignment that would be much more difficult in later years. In fact, because of the upper jaw has yet to solidify into a single bone during childhood, we can use a device called a palatal expander to gently widen the upper jaw and make more room for teeth – a process that would require extensive oral surgery in later adolescence or adulthood. Here are just a few of the benefits of interceptive orthodontic treatment:
  • Makes more room for crowded teeth without surgery
  • Prevents the need for tooth extraction
  • Improves facial symmetry by influencing jaw growth
  • Protects protruding front teeth from trauma
  • Reduces the overall amount of time a child will spend in braces
Stormberg Observation Program
To help our patients get the best possible care, we’ve created an observation program that lets us track orthodontic development over time, waiting for the perfect time to start treatment. The program works like this:
  • After your initial screening, Dr. Stormberg will monitor your child’s dental development until the perfect time to start treatment.
  • We’ll bring your child in for an evaluation every 6 months – and all of the observation appointments are complimentary.
  • Even if you don’t see any changes since your last visit, it’s important to attend these appointments every 6 months.
  • Regular screenings are the only way to ensure everything is developing normally.
  • To track the eruption of permanent teeth, we’ll also take periodic panoramic X-rays of your child – which, also, are complimentary. We will forward this progress x-ray to your family dentist with a progress report to keep their files up-to-date.
  • In addition to monitoring dental development, Dr. Stormberg will track jaw growth and bite development. If there’s a problem with these processes, we may recommend early orthodontic treatment.
  • Dr. Stormberg will continue monitoring your child’s development until the time is right for treatment. Then, he’ll create a treatment plan that helps your child achieve a healthy, beautiful smile that lasts a lifetime!
Addressing Crowded Teeth and Airway Constriction
Teeth in the upper jaw can become crowded if there is not enough space in the jaw to fit all of the teeth as they come in. Expanding the palate (the roof of the mouth) is an effective way to address this problem.
Bite misalignments can cause several problems, especially for young children, including:

• Airway constriction
• Uneven wear on teeth
• Difficulty biting and chewing
• Difficulty pronouncing words and speaking clearly
• May develop cavities

The Advantages of Adolescent Treatment
Adolescence is the perfect time to begin receiving treatment for the following reasons:
  • Improved Facial Appearance & Oral Health – As your teen progresses through orthodontic treatment, you’ll notice positive changes to their appearance and smile. Also, straighter teeth and a healthier smile are much easier to maintain, making trips to the dentist a breeze.
  • Positive Social Experience – Most of your teen’s classmates and friends will also have braces, making it that much easier to get your child to come to every appointment. They’ll be excited to wear braces with their friends, and go through the experience with their peers!
  • Saves Time & Money – The longer you wait to solve orthodontic issues, the worse they can become. Choosing to align treatment with your child’s natural growth and development will save you time, money, and minimize overall treatment time.
Types of Braces
When you think about braces, you might think about the old-fashioned ones you saw as a kid that made patients look like they had a mouth full of metal. Thanks to some of the newest designs, you no longer need to worry about how people look at you or how they perceive you.
  • Traditional Metal Braces: What most people think of when they hear the word “braces,” these are composed of high-grade stainless steel brackets and wires, providing a reliable, cost-effective way to move teeth.
  • Clear Braces: These are similar to traditional braces, but instead of stainless steel, the brackets are made from a clear ceramic composite that blends in with teeth, making them far less noticeable.
Invisalign Teen
Recently, modern technology has allowed orthodontists to produce Invisalign Teen, a new treatment that’s putting a smile on young faces everywhere. It is a system of clear, removable aligners specifically designed for teens. If you (or a teenager you know) are a candidate for this treatment, you might find it’s the best fit for your lifestyle with its many benefits:
  • You get to eat what you want
  • It’s easier to clean your teeth
  • Best of all, it’s virtually invisible!

Treatments for Teens

At this age, your child is still growing, and orthodontists can work efficiently with the natural growth spurts to help shape their bite and teeth correctly. This age group tends to have a shorter overall treatment time than older patients undergoing similar orthodontic treatment.

Treatment for Adults

Healthy teeth can be moved at any age, and straightening teeth dramatically improves your overall health, oral and dental hygiene, physical appearance, and psychological well-being. Straightening your smile as an adult can help minimize your risk of dental decay, gum loss, bone loss, and TMJ pain, and it also provides a boost of confidence and self-esteem that radiates through your personal and professional life. It truly is never too late for a beautiful smile, and we’re proud to offer a variety of convenient treatment options to help you get there.
Orthodontic Care for Adults

Orthodontic treatment is an investment in your best asset – your smile – and it comes with a number of distinct advantages:

  • Oral Health: Straighter teeth are easier to keep clean, which means that a new smile safeguards your teeth, gums, and jawbones from disease and decay for years to come.
  • A Renewed Appearance: A new smile is a powerful way to reinvigorate your physical appearance, and your loved ones will notice the difference for years to come.
  • A Boost in Confidence: The psychological benefits of a new smile are manifold. You’ll experience a boost in confidence, happiness, and self-esteem that radiates through every area your life – just imagine how much easier big presentations or social situations would be with a smile you’re proud of!
  • Easier Than Ever: Thanks to advances in orthodontic technology, modern braces are slimmer, more comfortable, and more aesthetically appealing than ever before, and treatment alternatives like Invisalign mean no one has to know you’re straightening your teeth.
Treatments for College Students

There are many benefits to pursuing orthodontic treatment as a college student or adult:

  • Efficient Treatment: Older patients are typically more responsible with their orthodontic appliances, which makes their treatment quick and efficient. If a student is consistent in their orthodontic care, they can have a straight smile by graduation!
  • Improved Appearance: If you’re looking for a change, a straighter smile is an investment that will last a lifetime and a great way to improve your appearance. With treatment options like Invisalign, treatment remains discreet.
  • Improved Oral Health: In addition to improved aesthetics, a straighter smile also improves your oral health. Straighter teeth make it easier to clean and protect your teeth, gums, and jawbones from diseases and decay for years to come.
  • Confidence Booster: Feeling good about your appearance is always a confidence booster. A straighter smile can restore your self-esteem and happiness. It will eliminate any discomfort you may have in social situations, class presentations, or dates!
